T'ai chi's slow, flowing movements and shifts of balance strengthens the legs while conditioning the tendons and ligaments of the ankles, knees, and hips. It increases range of motion making the body more resilient and less prone to injury. These benefits are also good for arthritic practitioners, according to a study done at Tufts University. T'ai chi improved the pain for patients three times more than just stretching. It's doesn't cause too much pressure on the knees and at the same time works to keep them healthy. T'ai chi is also recommended by the Arthritis Foundation as a good form of exercise.
What exactly is T'ai chi?
T'ai chi is used to promote personal energy for self healing and well-being. The t'ai chi model is based on the premise that there is a bio energy system in the body. The energy or Qi gets carried throughout the body in energy channels called meridians, this is similar to the meridians used in acupuncture. T'ai chi works because the muscle movements in the exercises are designed to stimulate the flow of Qi through the body and the major organs, freeing up stagnant energy that can cause pain and disease in the body. When Qi flows smoothly people are supposed to be healthy.
