Making the Adjustment
Anyone who has donned a set of dentures knows discomfort is part of the process. There are two periods when discomfort is at its peak: the initial days of wearing the new device and several years later, when the dentures may not fit properly.
The cause of the discomfort isn't a mystery. After the teeth are extracted, the dentures sit on the bony ridge that's leftover. Without the stability of permanent teeth, this bony ridge changes and shrinks over the years, while the dentures remained fixed. Slipping and sliding dentures cause sore spots, which is the reason for much of denture discomfort.
Dentures may not fit like a glove, but you shouldn't suffer. There are a variety of ways to prevent and resolve denture discomfort. Read about home remedies to treat your denture pain on the next page.
