1: You are a longtime, successful plastic surgeon. At what point in your career did you decide to help victims of domestic abuse, trauma or others who have birth defects?
In third grade, I was in school with a girl who had a cleft lip and palate. She was teased and left out of activities because of her deformity. Then she underwent reconstructive surgery. I saw that the surgery gave her the confidence that turned her life around, so I decided that I also wanted to give people this gift.
Later in my career, I performed a rhinoplasty on a female patient who said her nose was damaged in a car accident, but one month later she returned with additional damage. It was then that I realized she was in an abusive relationship; I will never forget that moment.
