How do I know if my GERD is better?

When you start treatment for your GERD, you and your doctor should set goals. One way to know you're getting better is to review those goals and check them off as you achieve them.

Below are some of the overall goals for treating GERD. If you are not achieving them, talk with your doctor about making changes to your treatment plan. Your treatment is working if it has:

  • reduced or eliminated symptoms
  • healed any damage that reflux may have caused to your esophagus
  • managed or prevented any conditions that can arise as GERD gets worse, such as Barrett's esophagus
  • kept symptoms from returning
