Could foods with tyramine cause my migraines?

For some people, tyramine, which occurs in certain foods, can trigger a migraine headache. Tyramine can be found in:

  • aged or processed cheeses
  • canned figs
  • chicken livers
  • organ meats
  • nuts
  • pickled foods
  • red wine and most other alcoholic beverages
  • vinegar
  • yeast
  • yogurt

Moderate amounts of tyramine can also be found in citrus fruits, raspberries, raisins, and red plums. If any of these foods trigger your headache, ask your doctor whether a tyramine-free diet would work for you.
