What are the causes of high cholesterol? How do blood-cholesterol levels get high enough to cause so much damage, such as that which leads to coronary heart disease? The answer lies partly in nature and partly in nurture.

Cholesterol is vital to the body. It produces steroid hormones, such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Cholesterol produces other steroid hormones that help regulate blood-sugar levels and are involved in immune functions. It helps make vitamin D and makes up cell membranes. Cholesterol also is used to make bile, a fluid necessary to help the body digest foods that contain fat.

A diet high in cholesterol can lead to problems such as coronary heart disease.

Because cholesterol is so important, your body has the ability to make all the cholesterol it needs. Luckily, the body also has a mechanism to balance cholesterol levels. When you eat too much dietary cholesterol from foods, the body decreases the amount it produces. The body can also dump some excess cholesterol into bile that leaves the body.

Sometimes this ability to balance cholesterol breaks down. In this case, heredity plays a role. In other cases, despite how naturally well-equipped we might be, the way we live our lives -- particularly our dietary and lifestyle habits -- can also lead to a problem with too much cholesterol.
