Insect bites and stings are minor irritations to most people, but to those who have an allergy to insect venom, the consequences can be serious.

Symptoms

Serious reactions to insect venom show themselves in various symptoms: shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, coughing, wheezing, and light-headedness. The affected area swells and becomes tender or numb. In extreme cases, anaphylaxis can occur.

Treatment

Serious reactions to bites and stings are treated by slowing the spread of the venom throughout the body and getting emergency medical treatment as soon as possible. The progress of the venom can be slowed somewhat by applying an ice pack to the affected area to slow the blood flow. Emergency medical treatment will usually consist of an epinephrine injection and an injection of antihistamine. In some cases, a corticosteroid may be given in addition to the injections.

Prevention

Recurrent reactions may be prevented with desensitization shots. Starting with an initially weak solution of insect extract, doses are gradually increased with each shot. This allows the body to build up tolerance to the effects of the insect venom. People who know they are sensitive to insect bites should carry injectable epinephrine (available by prescription).
